'It is unlucky' - Stephen Fleming opens up on CSK dealing with plethora of injuries in IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has opened himself up on the plethora of injuries that the side has been dealing with in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Fleming has also reflected on how a few of their players were injured even before the tournament started and how the medical staff has been extremely caring towards the players who are down to help them recover from the setbacks. The former cricketer is of the opinion that the injury problems have stemmed from the majority of the players getting involved in a high volume of cricket ahead of the season.
“It is unlucky. A couple of the boys came into the competition with niggles. [Ramakrishna] Ghosh was one of those that we were nursing through, and then he had a fall, so that was unfortunate,” said Fleming at the pre-match press conference ahead of CSK's encounter against Lucknow Super Giants, as quoted by The Hindu.
“We’re not doing anything to put strain on these guys. They’ve all been playing a lot of cricket; it’s just one of those things. But we’re certainly not turning a blind eye to it. We are working very hard on recovery, and we have a very professional staff who have been with us for a number of years, so that area is well looked after,” Fleming said further.
The head coach is, however, quite satisfied with the way CSK has made an impressive comeback in the ongoing season, especially after their sedated start under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy.
“We are really pleased with the way the players have improved. To be in this position now is something many thought we wouldn’t be, but the group’s been really strong. Given the core of young players, going forward, I think it’s quite exciting,” said Fleming.
