Jake Weatherald signs County Championship deal with Warwickshire for 2027
Jake Weatherald has signed a County Championship deal with Warwickshire for the 2027 season. The 31-year-old will spend the early stages of the campaign at Edgbaston, with the club confirming the agreement on August 19.
The signing follows a difficult week for Weatherald at international level. He was dropped from Australia's Test squad after scoring 0 and 23 in a shock defeat to Bangladesh, and his Test average now stands at 20.36 from six matches. Matt Renshaw has been named to replace him and is set to open alongside Travis Head in the second Test in Mackay.
Weatherald arrives at Edgbaston with strong county credentials. He made 483 runs at an average of 60.37 across nine innings for Leicestershire during the 2026 season
"I'm thrilled to be joining Warwickshire for the 2027 season. Edgbaston is one of the great grounds in world cricket and the opportunity to represent such a prestigious county was something I couldn't pass up. I enjoyed playing in England this year so to have the opportunity to join the Bears ahead of the Ashes is really exciting. Warwickshire has a proud history and a talented squad, and I'm looking forward to contributing both on and off the field," Weatherald said in an official statement.
"Jake is a player we've admired for a long time. He is a proven performer who has scored heavily at the highest level and gives us additional strength at the top of the order," Warwickshire Director of Cricket James Thomas said in the statement.
The club are also aiming to secure the return of all-rounder Beau Webster for next year, who stated that he considered the club his 'second home' after his first stint earlier this year.
Their overseas signings for the remainder of the 2026 County Championship season are New Zealand's Will Young and Indian left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who will join the side after the ongoing Test series in Sri Lanka. They sit third in Division One and will take on Sussex on August 20 at Edgbaston.
