The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially unveiled the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin on September 9. With the competition being one of world’s premier limited-overs events, this squad features a balanced mix of youth, experience, and all-round options as Team India aims to defend its continental crown and fine-tune combinations ahead of the global tournaments to follow.
In the batting department, after much speculation, Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain, adding further strength to an already solid lineup. With the top order settled Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma are once again expected to lead India’s charge, continuing their impressive run of form. The inclusion of Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube provides explosive all-round power, while Rinku Singh brings a proven finishing ability. Overall, the batting unit looks well-settled, combining young talent with proven performers, as India prepares for an exciting Asia Cup 2025 campaign under captain Suryakumar Yadav.
The squad announcement has seen some notable omissions. Yashasvi Jaiswal was not included, and Shreyas Iyer also missed out on a spot in the team despite his strong performance during the IPL 2025 campaign. In the all-rounders’ department, Washington Sundar was not selected either highlighting the tough competition for a place in the side ahead of the tournament.
In the bowling department, the Indian selectors have opted for a formidable attack, headlined by the much-anticipated return of Jasprit Bumrah. His inclusion will undoubtedly bolster the pace battery and bring a wealth of experience to the side. He will be joined by the ever-reliable Arshdeep Singh and the promising Harshit Rana, forming a pace trio that combines raw pace with skillful variations. In the spin department, the duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy will be crucial on the UAE pitches while all-rounder Axar Patel offers an excellent left-arm spin option, providing balance to the squad.
The BCCI has also announced a list of standby players to provide additional depth and cover for the main squad. This list includes pacer Prasidh Krishna, all-rounder Washington Sundar, and middle-order batsman Riyan Parag. They are joined by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, ensuring the team has quality backups across all departments for the tournament.
