Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of Sri Lanka Test series
Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India's two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15 in Galle. An assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence identified left knee discomfort, and the medical team advised against rushing his return to competitive cricket.
Bumrah had received an injection for a knee issue that flared up during the T20 World Cup, and his full recovery is now expected to take longer than initially anticipated. He had been named in the Shubman Gill-led squad, but his inclusion was conditional on receiving fitness clearance, which he has not been granted.
"There have been instances in the past where players have been rushed back to cricket, and have broken down. You can't take that risk again. Especially with Bumrah. So complete recovery is the only goal and there is lot of cricket left in the year. There is Asian Games, the tour of New Zealand and even the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early next year," said by a trusted source as quoted by Times of India.
Saransh Jain on how he made it to Indian Test squad at 33
The Ajit Agarkar-chaired men's senior selection committee is expected to name a replacement for Bumrah ahead of the series. Auqib Nabi has emerged as the front-runner for that spot.
The 29-year-old has impressed during India A's recent fixtures against Sri Lanka, picking up six wickets across two matches last month. That performance has placed him firmly in contention for a call-up to the senior side.
India's current pace options in the squad include Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna. The addition of Nabi, if confirmed, would strengthen the seam bowling resources available to the team for the two-match series.
R Ashwin names his India squad for 2027 ODI World Cup
The two-Test series against Sri Lanka gets under way on August 15 in Galle. The second and final Test is scheduled for August 23 in Colombo.
India will head into the series without their primary pace bowler, with the selection committee yet to formally announce a replacement. The squad is led by Shubman Gill, and the management has made clear that Bumrah's long-term fitness takes priority over his availability for this assignment.
