Jemimah Rodrigues reminds Sunil Gavaskar of his World Cup promise, invites him for musical celebration after India’s triumph

India Women’s World Cup-winning star Jemimah Rodrigues has turned her cricketing triumph into a musical celebration, and she is bringing along none other than Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. Following India’s historic Women’s ODI World Cup victory in Navi Mumbai, Rodrigues took to social media to remind Gavaskar about a fun promise he had made before the final.

Prior to the 2025 Women’s World Cup final against South Africa, Gavaskar had joked on India Today that if the women’s team went all the way, he would join Rodrigues for a song. Now that India Women have created history by lifting their maiden World Cup title, Rodrigues is making sure the legendary batter keeps his word.

Her Instagram post quickly went viral, with fans flooding the comments section urging Gavaskar to accept the challenge. Interestingly, this wouldn’t be Rodrigues and Gavaskar’s first musical collaboration, as  the pair previously performed together at the BCCI Naman Awards 2024, where Rodrigues played the guitar as Gavaskar sang the classic ‘Kya Hua Tera Wada’.

Rodrigues’ light-hearted video comes after a career-defining tournament. Her unbeaten 127 against Australia in the semi-final is being hailed as one of the greatest knocks in Indian women’s cricket history, propelling India into the final. Her calm temperament and fearless stroke play made her one of the standout players of the campaign.

Although she could not replicate that form in the final, scoring 24 before being dismissed by Marizanne Kapp, her infectious energy on the field and motivational presence proved crucial in India’s 52-run victory over South Africa. Rodrigues finished the tournament with 292 runs in seven innings at an impressive average of 58.40.

Speaking about India’s campaign, the hosts finished fourth in the group stage of the Women’s World Cup 2025, winning three matches, losing three, and with one game ending as a no result. In the final, Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma delivered outstanding all-round performances with both bat and ball, guiding India to a historic World Cup title.
