Welsh Fire finally ended their five-match losing streak in The Hundred Women 2025 with a thumping 36-run victory over Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston, thanks to a breathtaking all-round display from Jess Jonassen. The Australian all-rounder smashed a blistering 44 off just 17 balls before returning with match-winning bowling figures of 3/24, earning her the Player of the Match award.
Put in to bat, Fire were rocked early when skipper Tammy Beaumont fell cheaply to Megan Schutt for just 2 runs. Sophia Dunkley, however, steadied the innings with a fluent 53 off 43 balls, striking six fours and a six to provide much-needed stability. Hayley Matthews (34* off 33) added vital support through the middle overs.
The real fireworks arrived in the final stretch when Jonassen walked in at 99/2 after 72 balls. Launching into Phoenix’s spinners, she tore into Hannah Baker with four consecutive sixes in one set, igniting the Edgbaston crowd. Her 44 off 17 balls at a staggering strike rate of 258.82 powered Fire to a commanding 150/3. Matthews and Jonassen’s late partnership of 50 runs from just 25 balls turned a steady platform into an imposing total.

Phoenix’s reply faltered from the outset as Shabnim Ismail struck with pace and precision, removing both openers Emma Lamb and Marie Kelly for ducks. Her fiery spell of 3/16 left Phoenix reeling at 5/2. Georgia Voll’s brisk 29 off 18 offered brief hope, but Jonassen dismissed her with smart flight, continuing her all-round dominance.
Captain Ellyse Perry fought a lone battle with a determined 55 off 43 balls, but lacked support as wickets tumbled at the other end. Matthews (3/21) and Jonassen combined effectively, sharing six wickets between them to dismantle the Phoenix middle and lower order. Once Perry fell, Phoenix’s innings unraveled, finishing at 114/9 in their full 100 balls.
This emphatic victory not only gave Welsh Fire their first win of the season but also extinguished Birmingham Phoenix’s faint Eliminator hopes. With momentum finally on their side, Fire will look to carry this confidence into the remaining fixtures of The Hundred Women 2025.
