Joe Root reveals reason behind his return as England Test captain

Joe Root has opened up on the key factor behind his decision to return as England‘s Test captain, revealing that newly appointed head coach Stephen Fleming played a decisive role in convincing him to take on the leadership responsibility once again. Root admitted that the prospect of working alongside the former New Zealand skipper reignited his enthusiasm for the role after initially stepping down as captain in 2022.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently announced Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of the men’s Test team, while Root was confirmed as Ben Stokes‘ successor as captain. The appointments came following Stokes’ retirement from international cricket during England’s home Test series against New Zealand last month.

Although vice-captain Harry Brook was widely considered the leading contender to replace Stokes, England’s managing director Rob Key opted to hand the responsibility back to Root. Key explained that the captaincy opportunity had arrived earlier than expected for Brook, paving the way for Root’s return to the role he previously held between 2017 and 2022. Speaking after his appointment, Root acknowledged that Fleming’s arrival was one of the biggest reasons behind his decision to accept the challenge again.

“If I’m being brutally honest, it was a big reason why I wanted to do it. I’m very excited by the way he sees the game, where he sees us sit as a team, and the work that we have to do to get to where we want to get to. All of that got me very excited about taking this role on,” Root told the ECB.

The experienced batter also praised Fleming’s achievements both as a player and a coach, expressing confidence that the partnership could help England build something special in the coming years.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with him. He’s obviously got a wealth of experience and done some amazing things within the game as a player and as a coach. I’m very much looking forward to the next little while, and us trying to build something pretty special together,” Root added.

Root’s first spell as England’s Test captain lasted from 2017 to 2022. During that period, he led the side in 65 Tests, registering 27 wins, 27 defeats and 11 draws. While his captaincy produced several memorable victories, England also endured inconsistent results before Root stepped down and Ben Stokes took over.

Meanwhile, his first assignment after reclaiming the captaincy will be a three-match home Test series against Pakistan, scheduled to take place from August 19 to September 13. However, England will begin the series without Fleming on the sidelines. The newly appointed head coach will miss the Pakistan series due to family commitments in New Zealand. During his absence, former England opener Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach.
