Johan Botha steps down as Queensland and Brisbane Heat Head Coach

Former South Africa off-spinner Johan Botha has stepped down as the coach of the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Men's Team.

Botha becomes the third state and Big Bash League coach to depart this year after Greg Shipperd left his duties with New South Wales and Sydney Sixers. Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin has taken over the NSW job, and former all-rounder James Hopes has taken the Sixers position.

The Sydney Thunder also appointed former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as their coach, parting ways with Tom Moody after five years. Adam Voges stepped down as Western Australia coach after eight years, having won three Shields and four One-Day titles, but will remain coach of the Perth Scorchers.

"Queensland Cricket has today accepted the resignation of Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls coach Johan Botha," an official statement said, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

"While we haven't achieved all of our on-field goals in that time, Johan has made a strong contribution towards the development of the next generation of Queensland and Brisbane Heat players. Despite this decision, Johan's contributions to our high performance group have been valued." We wish he and his family every success in the future and thank him for his efforts across the Sheffield Shield, One Day Cup and BBL competitions," Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said in the statement.

Botha's position at the helm had come under scrutiny despite a season where Queensland finished third in both the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup. Queensland made the Shield final in his first year at the helm, in 2024-25. On the other hand, the Heat had less success in the BBL, finishing fifth and seventh across two seasons, after having won the title in 2023-24 before Botha took over.

Uncertainty over coaching roles comes amid talks of opening the league to private investors. Cricket Victoria is set to merge the Melbourne Stars and Renegades under one administration, which leaves uncertainty over coaching roles at both teams. Cricket Victoria also plans to sell the second franchise license this year.
