John Turner retires from professional cricket at 25 due to back injuries

Hampshire and England seamer John Turner has retired from professional cricket at the age of 25. The Johannesburg-born right-arm quick cited a persistent back stress fracture as the reason behind his decision, having been absent from all cricket since June 2025.

Turner represented England in four internationals during 2024, appearing in two ODIs and two T20Is against West Indies and claiming three wickets across those matches. He held an ECB development contract until late 2025 and still had two years remaining on his Hampshire deal when he made the announcement.

His final first-class appearance came in Hampshire's match against Sussex at Southampton, which ran from May 23 to May 25, 2025. Away from cricket, Turner studied economics and finance at the University of Exeter.

"I have, however, decided to retire from the game, and as you can imagine, this has been one of the hardest decisions I've had to make. The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, as well as my injury record, naturally made me think of my future both as a cricketer and away from the game, and subsequently, I decided now was the right time to pursue my next challenge," said Turner in a statement.

"It was always my dream to play professional and international cricket, and doing so for Hampshire and England has been nothing short of living out those same childhood dreams," he added.

The stress fracture ruled Turner out of all cricket from June 2025 onwards, a period exceeding one year before his retirement announcement in August 2026. The injury followed a broader pattern of fitness concerns that, by his own account, led him to weigh his future both within and beyond the sport.

With two years still left on his Hampshire contract, the retirement was made on medical and personal grounds rather than any contractual expiry. The injury effectively removed any realistic prospect of Turner returning to county or international cricket, making the decision one he described as among the hardest of his life.

Turner was part of a Hampshire squad that reached four T20 Finals Days and two One-Day Cup finals across the five years leading up to his retirement. His absence since June 2025 had already created a gap in the county's seam attack, and his retirement now makes that gap permanent. Hampshire director of cricket Giles White paid tribute to the outgoing seamer.

"John is an exceptionally talented player, and all of Hampshire Cricket is saddened that his journey in the professional game has come to an end. He gave everything for the club and for England, and whilst we are saddened that he has called time on his playing career, we wish him all the best in his next chapter, and we will look forward to welcoming him back in the future," said White.

"The opportunity and belief the club showed in me are something I could never thank them enough for. I have experienced more over the last few years than I could ever imagine, and none of that would be possible without the support from everyone at the club," said Turner.
