Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott is set to part ways with the team after the T20 World Cup 2026. Trott was named the head coach of Afghanistan in July 2022. He had his contract extended in December 2024 after a successful year.
As per The Cricketer, Trott is understood to exit the Afghanistan camp at the conclusion of the mega event, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka next year, bringing an end to an almost four-year stint.
Trott had been roped in by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in 2022 initially for an 18-month stint. The contract was renewed in January 2024 and that extension was further followed by another one later in the year.
Afghanistan have tasted plenty if success with Trott at the helm. They made their first-ever appearance at the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2024 and registered two historical victories - against New Zealand (group-stage) and Australia (Super Eight).
They did not let their momentum slip, registering back-to-back ODI series victories against South Africa (2-1) in September 2024 and Bangladesh (3-0) in October 2025 in the United Arab Emirates.
The 2025 Champions Trophy qualification was another significant milestone for Afghanistan, as they finished in the top eight at the 2023 World Cup to meet the selection criteria. Their 2023 campaign comprised wins against the likes of England (69 runs), Pakistan (eight wickets) and Sri Lanka (seven wickets).

For Trott, the Afghanistan head coach stint was his first in the coaching space. Prior to this, he was a Scotland's batting consultant during the 2021 T20 World Cup. Trott could be expected to ply his trade with either international teams or the domestic franchises.
