‘Just like he is for Argentina…’ - Mohammad Kaif cites Lionel Messi's example to back Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for 2027 ODI World Cup
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has thrown his weight behind Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma amid growing speculation over their ODI futures, insisting that India will need the experienced duo for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Questions over whether Rohit and Kohli remain part of India's long-term plans have intensified in recent weeks, with several reports suggesting that the senior batters could be phased out before the next 50-over World Cup. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently dismissed reports claiming that the third ODI against England at Lord's could be Rohit's final appearance in the format.
Kaif said the conditions in the 2027 World Cup will demand experience and composure, making Rohit and Kohli invaluable assets for India.
"The 2027 phase will be very important. People are talking about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma because it won't be an easy World Cup," Kaif said on Cricbuzz.
"The conditions will be different, there will be bouncy pitches, and India will need both these players there. We would definitely want them to play as many matches as possible from now on and remain in good form."
To underline the importance of experienced players in major tournaments, Kaif drew a comparison with Argentina football legend Lionel Messi, explaining that veteran stars often influence games even when they are not the leading scorers.
"Lionel Messi is 39 years old and his team has reached the FIFA World Cup final. He didn't score in the semifinal but provided an (two) assist (s)," he said.
Kaif added that experienced players help younger teammates by guiding them through pressure situations and creating opportunities, much like Messi has done for Argentina.
"That's what experience brings. When you have younger players who can finish the job, experienced players know how to guide them and create opportunities, So just like Messi is for Argentina, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is for India in World Cup."
Kaif concluded by stressing that experience is a crucial factor in any sport, especially in high-pressure global tournaments. He believes India will greatly benefit from having two of the finest ODI batters of the modern era alongside young captain Shubman Gill in South African conditions.
"Whether it's football or cricket, experience plays a huge role. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are considered among the greatest ODI players, so India will 100 per cent need them, especially under captain Shubman Gill in South African conditions," Kaif said.
With the countdown to the 2027 ODI World Cup already underway, the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to remain a major talking point. While speculation persists, Kaif's remarks underline the belief that India's experienced stars still have a significant role to play on the biggest stage.
