Justin Langer hails Vaibhav Suryavanshi as a bright sign for cricket’s future

Enter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the teenage batting sensation whose fearless strokeplay and generational ability have taken global cricket by storm. Former Australian head coach Justin Langer recently opened up about the incredible depth in Indian cricket, singling out Suryavanshi as one of the most breathtaking young players he has ever watched.

In a discussion with former England skipper Michael Vaughan regarding player depth across nations, Langer was quick to highlight the astonishing talent pipeline coming out of India. Reflecting on his initial encounters with Suryavanshi in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Langer recalled how the coaching staff didn’t even hold a specific strategy talk for the youngster when he first stepped onto the park at just 14 years old.

“Yeah, this Suryavanshi, this kid, this Indian who’s just got Man of the Match in his second One Day International or third One Day International the other day. We coached against him two seasons ago, and he’s 14 years old. We didn’t even talk about him in the team talk, he’s 14!,” Langer said on Stick to Cricket show.

That subtle oversight vanished on the very first delivery. Facing a seasoned international bowler on his IPL debut, Suryavanshi strolled out to the middle and nonchalantly launched his first ball over cover for a six. Langer described sitting back with his morning coffee, completely stunned by the teenager’s audacity. After an impactful blitz, Suryavanshi waddled off, only to smash the second-fastest hundred in IPL history just two matches later.

The onslaught continued into subsequent seasons. Facing Langer’s Lucknow Super Giants team while representing Rajasthan Royals, Suryavanshi made light work of a daunting 230-run target, blasting 90 runs off a mere 30 balls before defenders could even process the game situation. For Langer, witnessing a 15-year-old dominate world-class bowlers with such nonchalance is a clear testament that the future of cricket is brighter and more explosive than ever.

He added, “Like, he walks out, strolls out to bat, and we’ve got, um, one of our international bowlers bowling. His first ball in IPL cricket! His first—and we’re just sitting there, I was just about to have my first cup of coffee to watch the first ball of the IPL—hits it for six over cover! His first ball in IPL cricket! And we went…

And then he got 30 off not much, waddles off. Two games later, he gets the second-fastest 100 in the history of IPL. Then we played him this year for Rajasthan Royals. We got 230. Before you could blink, the game was over. He got 90 off 30 pills! He’s 15 years old! And there’s talent… so much talent!.”

Following his historic domestic and franchise exploits, Suryavanshi was fast-tracked into international cricket, where his aggressive approach immediately bore fruit. Earning a Player of the Match accolade in just his early international outings, the young prodigy has demonstrated that his fearless style translates seamlessly to the highest level.
