Kagiso Rabada ruled out of Australia Test series with hamstring tear

Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of South Africa's three-match Test series against Australia after scans confirmed a complete or near-complete rupture of his right hamstring muscle, classified as a grade-three injury. The recovery timeline of up to 10 weeks means he will not be available for any part of the home series.

South Africa also hosts Australia in a three-match ODI series, with the opening fixture at Kingsmead on September 24. That series, too, falls within Rabada's recovery window.

A grade-three hamstring diagnosis represents the most severe category of such injuries, involving substantial disruption to the muscle fibres and requiring the longest rehabilitation period. The Proteas had planned to use a four-day provincial fixture between the Lions and Boland on September 10 as a fitness run for Rabada ahead of the Test series, but that preparation pathway is no longer available given the severity of the diagnosis.

As reported by SA Cricket Magazine, the injury compounds an already difficult situation for South Africa's pace attack. Nandre Burger is currently sidelined with a vertebral stress fracture, leaving the Proteas without two of their frontline fast bowlers simultaneously. Cricket South Africa had not named a replacement for Rabada in the Test squad at the time of writing, and no cover selection had been confirmed. The combined absence of Rabada and Burger places significant pressure on the selectors to identify pace options capable of leading the attack across three Tests against one of the world's strongest batting line-ups.

Rabada's figures against Australia underline why his absence carries such weight. Across 11 Tests against them, he has claimed 58 wickets at an average of 21.39, a return that places him among the most effective bowlers in the history of this particular contest.

His most recent high-profile display came at Lord's, where he produced match figures of 9 for 110 in the 2025 World Test Championship final, demonstrating his ability to perform at the highest level in the biggest matches. Rabada has accumulated 340 wickets across his Test career, cementing his status as South Africa's leading fast bowler of the current era.
