Kamindu Mendis appointed Colombo Kaps captain after Kusal Mendis ruled out with hamstring injury

Kamindu Mendis has stepped in as captain of Colombo Kaps after Kusal Mendis suffered a right hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the rest of the Lanka Premier League 2026 season. Kusal picked up the injury on Sunday, July 19 while playing against Kandy Royals at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, forcing him to exit the match during the chase following medical assessment.

The injury inflicted a severe blow to both Colombo Kaps and the Sri Lanka national setup. Kusal had struck a 53-ball 79 in his opening LPL fixture against Galle Gallants before the setback occurred. Medical evaluations subsequently confirmed he cannot feature in any further league matches, with the wicketkeeper-batter now beginning his recovery at the National High Performance Centre under Sri Lanka Cricket's supervision. Kamindu, a 27-year-old batting all-rounder, now shoulders leadership duties as the franchise navigates the critical league stages ahead.

"[Kusal] Mendis sustained a right hamstring injury while attempting a run during the Colombo Kaps' match against the Kandy Royals on 19 July at the SSC, Colombo. Accordingly, he will return to the National High Performance Centre to commence his rehabilitation program," an SLC media release said.

The appointment compounds timing troubles for Sri Lanka's preparations. Kusal's injury arrives less than a month before the nation's home Test series against India commences on August 15. The series opens at Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to 19, before shifting to the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo for the second Test, which spans August 23 to 27. Mendis, a key player across formats, would have been expected to keep wickets in the series against India, though confirmation on recovery timing remains absent.

The timing places Kamindu in an unenviable position. The Kaps face an upcoming clash against Kandy Royals on Thursday, July 23 at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. The tournament concludes with the final at the R. Premadasa Stadium on August 8, 2026, giving the new skipper limited runway to establish rhythm in his fresh leadership role while maintaining his batting responsibilities.

Kusal's form prior to injury underscored what the Kaps have lost. Beyond his strong LPL showing, he had struck 550 runs across 11 PSL innings at a strike rate of 168.19 earlier this season. The franchise must now depend on Kamindu's stewardship alongside squad depth to mount a credible challenge through the league phase and into the playoffs scheduled to begin August 5.
