Karan Sharma on how Ranji captaincy removal shaped his growth as cricketer
Karan Sharma, the Uttar Pradesh all-rounder, has reflected on the experience of being removed from the Ranji Trophy captaincy mid-season and how the setback shaped his approach to cricket.
Born on October 31, 1998, Sharma made his first-class debut on February 17, 2022, for Uttar Pradesh in the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy. He has since established himself as a key player in domestic cricket, combining his role as a right-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler across formats.
The removal from captaincy came as a significant moment in Sharma's career, prompting him to reassess his priorities and mindset. Rather than viewing the incident negatively, Sharma has chosen to extract learning from the experience and use it as a foundation for personal and professional growth.
Sharma reflected on the broader lessons that difficult phases in a cricketer's career can offer. He emphasised the importance of learning from setbacks and using them as stepping stones for improvement rather than dwelling on disappointment.
"I believe every phase teaches you something and carries a message. As a cricketer and as a person, you should correct your mistakes, learn from them and keep moving forward. Every phase in life matters, and I learned a great deal from that experience," Sharma was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Sharma acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with leading a state team. He recognised that captaincy demands not only personal contribution but also the ability to guide teammates and steer the side towards success. The role requires balancing individual performance with collective team objectives.
"Being the captain of your state is an honour, but it also comes with great responsibility — to help your team win matches, contribute to the side, take it forward and lead it to the best of your ability," Sharma continued.
Beyond the Ranji Trophy, Sharma has made his mark in the UP T20 League, where he has been a standout performer. He has guided Kashi Rudras to two titles in the tournament and emerged as the highest run-scorer in the competition, establishing himself as a key figure in the state's shorter-format cricket. However, his domestic success did not translate into IPL selection, a disappointment that tested his resilience.
"I honestly do not know what happened or why I was not shortlisted for the IPL auction. I was surprised and disappointed because I was the highest run-scorer in the UP T20 League and still was not picked. But I am focused on doing what is in my control and continuing to perform," Sharma said.
Sharma maintains a forward-looking approach to his cricket, treating each season as a fresh opportunity to prove himself. He balances the satisfaction of past achievements with the demands of present competition, understanding that consistency across formats strengthens his domestic credentials.
"Personally and professionally, it feels great when you are the top scorer and the team becomes champion, like last season. Finishing on such a high is always satisfying. But this is a fresh season now, every day is new, and my approach is to take it one match at a time and reach the final," he concluded.
