KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan? Ravichandran Ashwin reveals his first-choice wicketkeeper for India’s ODI World Cup 2027 campaign

With the 2027 ODI World Cup still some distance away, discussions around India’s ideal playing XI have already begun to intensify. One of the biggest talking points is the wicketkeeper’s role, where multiple contenders continue to stake their claim through consistent performances and versatility.
KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson all remain in the conversation, giving the selectors an enviable yet challenging decision. Rahul has impressed with his calm presence behind the stumps and ability to anchor the innings in the middle order, while Kishan offers explosive batting at the top and left-handed variety. Samson’s elegance and Pant’s match-winning capabilities add further depth to the selection puzzle, making the race for the gloves one of the most closely watched aspects of India’s preparations.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the debate and made it clear that he sees Rahul as the frontrunner to don the gloves at the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin also suggested that Kishan would be a suitable backup option but urged fans and experts not to write off Rishabh Pant prematurely.
“KL Rahul will be the first choice keeper and Ishan Kishan can probably get a boarding pass as the back-up for the World Cup. But I don’t think it’s fair to let go of Rishabh Pant this early, considering the World Cup will be in South Africa. Pant has performed decently in the middle-order in ODIs. Kishan played an outstanding knock but let’s not jump the gun,” Ashwin said.
His comments underline the importance of experience and adaptability in major ICC tournaments. Rahul has repeatedly shown his ability to switch roles depending on the team’s requirements, making him a valuable asset in high-pressure matches. At the same time, Ashwin acknowledged Kishan’s recent brilliance while emphasizing that one standout innings should not automatically settle a long-term selection debate.
Pant’s name also remains firmly in contention according to Ashwin, especially because the left-hander has demonstrated his ability to accelerate in the middle overs and provide balance to India’s batting lineup.

India are expected to enter the 2027 ODI World Cup as one of the favourites, with optimism surrounding the team’s blend of youth and experience. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, expectations are high that the Men in Blue can mount a serious challenge for the title and continue their strong performances in global tournaments. The batting unit could become even stronger if veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are included in the squad. Their vast experience in ICC events, combined with Gill’s emerging leadership and a talented core of younger players, would provide India with both stability and firepower.
The wicketkeeper’s spot will therefore be more than just a selection call—it could shape the balance of the entire playing XI. Whether the team management opts for Rahul’s reliability, Kishan’s attacking flair, Samson’s X-factor, or another contender, the decision will likely be based on form, conditions, and team combination closer to the tournament.
