The ‘El Clásico’ of the IPL returns today as the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings face off at the Wankhede Stadium in a high-stakes Match 33 of the 2026 season. This clash marks a critical juncture for both five-time champions, who currently sit in the bottom half of the table with two wins and four losses each after six games.
Mumbai Indians enter the contest with fresh momentum following a dominant 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans, powered by a stunning century from Tilak Varma. Meanwhile, CSK are looking to bounce back after a narrow defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, compounded by the loss of their in-form batter Ayush Mhatre due to injury.
CSK’s campaign has been dealt a significant blow with Mhatre ruled out of the tournament. The 18-year-old top-order batter sustained a left hamstring tear during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18, and subsequent medical assessments confirmed he will require six to twelve weeks of rehabilitation.
Mhatre had been a revelation this season, emerging as CSK’s leading run-scorer with 201 runs in six matches. His aggressive approach at the top, reflected in a remarkable strike rate of 177.87, gave the team explosive starts and stability in equal measure. His absence now leaves a sizeable gap in the batting lineup, forcing the think tank to rethink combinations ahead of a crucial phase in the tournament.
The timing of the injury couldn’t have been worse, with CSK already struggling for consistency. Losing a player in such red-hot form not only affects the balance of the side but also adds pressure on the middle order to deliver under challenging circumstances.

Ahead of the marquee MI vs CSK encounter, former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has weighed in on the situation and suggested a potential solution. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth named Urvil Patel as the ‘perfect like-for-like replacement’ for Mhatre in the CSK playing XI.
Srikkanth’s endorsement highlights Patel’s ability to replicate the aggressive intent that Mhatre brought to the top order. Known for his fearless stroke play, Patel has previously shown glimpses of his match-winning capabilities and could provide the spark CSK desperately need.
“He did brilliantly for CSK last year. He is a blasting cricketer and a perfect like-for-like replacement for Ayush Mhatre. Nobody can replace Mhatre’s form from this season. But if Urvil Patel has a day out, he’ll finish the match,” Srikkanth said.
