Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has sparked discussion among IPL fans with a fascinating trade suggestion involving two of the league’s biggest franchises ahead of the IPL 2027 season. With teams already beginning to assess their squads following a disappointing 2026 campaign, Srikkanth believes a major transfer could help reshape the fortunes of both sides.
The legendary opener shared his views while discussing possible trade scenarios for the upcoming season. Having watched several teams struggle to meet expectations in IPL 2026, Srikkanth feels some franchises may need to make bold decisions if they want to return to title contention. His latest proposal involves a move that would undoubtedly rank among the biggest trades in IPL history if it were ever to materialize.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth suggested that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should explore the possibility of bringing Hardik Pandya into their setup. According to the former India skipper, the star all-rounder would be an ideal fit for Chennai’s balance and leadership structure. Srikkanth went a step further by proposing that Ruturaj Gaikwad could be part of a trade deal with Mumbai Indians (MI). He also stressed that Chennai should do everything possible to retain young batter Ayush Mhatre, whom he described as one of the franchise’s most valuable long-term assets.
“Hardik Pandya will be an ideal fit in CSK. He’ll be terrific for CSK. Ruturaj Gaikwad should be traded to MI for CSK to land Hardik Pandya. But CSK shouldn’t let go of Ayush Mhatre at any cost as he’s a fantastic cricketer,” Srikkanth said.
He further suggested that Chennai could potentially include additional players in a larger deal if required, highlighting how highly he rates Hardik’s value as a proven match-winning all-rounder.
Interestingly, Srikkanth’s proposal comes after both Hardik and Gaikwad endured challenging IPL 2026 seasons. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians finished eighth and ninth respectively on the points table, with neither side managing to secure a playoff berth.
Gaikwad struggled to produce his usual consistency with the bat, scoring 337 runs at an average of 28.08 during the season. Hardik also found it difficult to make his customary impact, managing 206 runs while enduring a tough campaign with both bat and ball. Despite those numbers, both players remain among the most valuable Indian cricketers in the league due to their leadership experience and proven track record in previous seasons.

Apart from discussing the Hardik-Gaikwad possibility, Srikkanth also weighed in on the reported trade talks involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC). The former opener believes the move could benefit both franchises. He feels Pant would enjoy returning to Delhi, where he spent the majority of his IPL career, while Kuldeep could thrive on the larger boundaries at Lucknow.
Although no official confirmation has been made regarding either trade, Srikkanth’s comments have added further intrigue to what promises to be a fascinating build-up to IPL 2027. With franchises expected to evaluate their squads carefully in the coming months, speculation surrounding blockbuster player movements is only likely to intensify.
