Kwena Maphaka ruled out of South Africa’s white-ball tour of Pakistan; replacement announced

South Africa‘s young fast bowling sensation, Kwena Maphaka, has been ruled out of the entire white-ball leg of the upcoming tour against Pakistan and the one-off T20I against Namibia. The setback stems from a hamstring strain sustained during a recent domestic fixture, sidelining the 19-year-old for four weeks. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has swiftly announced replacements for the pace unit, ensuring the team remains competitive for the challenging assignments ahead.

Maphaka’s unfortunate hamstring strain occurred while representing the Lions in a four-day domestic match against Western Province at Newlands last week. The promising young fast bowler managed to complete only 5.5 overs in the first innings before experiencing discomfort and leaving the field for initial assessment. Although an immediate scan suggested no major damage, allowing him to return to action for the second innings where he impressed with a spell of 3/26 in ten overs, subsequent and more thorough medical evaluations revealed the true extent of the issue.

Cricket South Africa’s official statement confirmed that the injury is a grade 1 to 2 hamstring strain, necessitating a mandatory four-week period of rehabilitation. This timeline rules Maphaka out entirely from the limited-overs fixtures on the itinerary, including the one-off T20I against Namibia and the entirety of the white-ball leg of the crucial Pakistan tour. This withdrawal is a significant blow to the team, given the teenager’s impressive recent record of 15 wickets in 13 T20Is and five wickets across three ODIs, where his express pace was expected to be a key weapon.

In response to Kwena Maphaka’s forced withdrawal, Cricket South Africa immediately named Ottneil Baartman as the direct replacement for the pace battery. Baartman will join the squad for the one-off T20I against Namibia, scheduled for October 11, which precedes the main tour. Furthermore, Baartman has also secured a place in the three-match T20 International series squad that will face Pakistan later in the month. This selection provides a valuable opportunity for the experienced domestic campaigner to showcase his skills on the international stage.

In another crucial adjustment to the touring party, Lizaad Williams, who was already part of the initial T20I squad announced, has now been added to the One-Day International (ODI) squad as well. These strategic additions provide the South African attack with necessary depth and experience to navigate the demanding conditions of the subcontinent. The team faces a packed schedule, with the tour of Pakistan officially beginning with two Test matches from October 12, followed by the three T20Is starting October 28, and concluding with a three-match ODI series that runs until November 8. The tour’s first fixture is the one-off T20I against Namibia.
