Former Indian domestic stalwart Priyank Panchal has come out with strong words for Ayush Badoni after the Delhi batter received his maiden call-up to the senior team. Badoni was recently announced as Washington Sundar's replacement for the second and third ODIs against New Zealand.

Panchal, who retired from all forms of cricket in May 2025, pointed out the potential Badoni possesses. However, he also flagged a certain level of discomfort Badoni has faced during his four seasons in the IPL so far.

Interesting to see Badoni’s selection. It’s clear he is being groomed for the role with the India A selection too. Filled with immense promise, I’ve unfortunately found him to be lacking the grit against international quality in the IPL. Hope he has a great series tho. #INDvNZ

Speaking of Badoni's IPL career so far, he has represented Lucknow Super Giants right since their inception in the marquee T20 league. Badoni has been constantly backed by the franchise and has played 56 IPL matches so far, registering 963 runs at an impressive strike rate of 138.56 with six half-centuries.

Sundar was ruled out of the 50-over leg of the series after suffering an acute discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI in Vadodara. It was also the same reason due to which Sundar did not come at his usual position to bat during the chase. The all-rounder eventually was sent to bat beneath Harshit Rana and stayed till the end to take India home. However, Sundar looked in apparent pain while running between the wickets.

Former Indian opener questions Badoni's call-up for NZ ODIs

Badoni will be joining the national camp on the back of representing Delhi in the 2025 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has been handy with the ball during both tournaments. It will be interesting to see whether Badoni's off-spin will be tested out if at all he gets an opportunity to be a part of the XI.
