'Let him be, don't expect the world' - Sourav Ganguly's massive statement on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the blue-eyed boy of Indian cricket after putting in some mind-boggling performances during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. At the age of just 15, Sooryavanshi won the Orange Cap after finishing the season with the most runs - 776 in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.30. The left-handed batter also earned his maiden call-up to the Indian T20I team for the series against Ireland and England and the subsequent Asian Games competition later this year.

While the cricket fraternity is excited to see Sooryavanshi taking international cricket by storm, former India captain Sourav Ganguly opined that he should be allowed to take his time to settle in, as the pitches around the world might not be as good as the ones he was batting on during the IPL.

“I think we should let him be, he's just 15-year-old and I don't think he'll bother too much about pressure and that's what we get to see him in the IPL. Obviously, playing for India is different and he will be touring where the wickets will be a little different," Ganguly was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The former BCCI president said that when there is more seam movement and bounce on offer, it will be a tough challenge for Sooryavanshi. However, Ganguly opined that if he is given some time to find his feet, Sooryavanshi's got the talent to succeed at the international level.

“It will seam and there will be a bit more bounce and a bit more movement with the new ball, so the game is a bit different, but I think he's got enormous talent. So just let him be, don't expect the world from him straightaway. Just allow him to settle down because you know he's got a lot of talent like many others in India,” he added.

India are set to play two T20Is against Ireland later this month. Then, they will be heading to England to play a five-match T20I series in July. Sooryavanshi is the backup opener in these squads, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson expected to start.
