Manav Suthar takes 10-wicket haul to power India to victory, creates massive feat
Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar claimed a 10-wicket haul in the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium on August 19, 2026, powering India to a 165-run victory. Suthar finished with match figures of 10 wickets for 131 runs, taking 4 wickets in the first innings and 6/55 in the second.
The Galle Test was only Suthar's second appearance at this level. He had made his Test debut against Afghanistan in June 2026, returning a 7-wicket match haul that included 6 wickets in the first innings. His output across both Tests has placed him among the most closely watched young spinners to emerge in Indian cricket in recent years.
At 24 years and 16 days, Suthar is now the youngest Indian spinner to claim a 10-wicket haul in an away Test. That distinction had previously rested with Harbhajan Singh, who took 10 wickets against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2008 at the age of 28 years and 28 days.
Suthar's haul also made him only the second Indian bowler to register a six-wicket haul in each of his first two Test appearances. Narendra Hirwani had set that standard earlier, claiming 8 wickets in each innings on debut against West Indies in Chennai in January 1988, and then taking 6/59 in the second innings against New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, in November 1988.
The overall record for the youngest Indian bowler to take a 10-wicket haul in an away Test belongs to Irfan Pathan, who claimed 11 wickets against Bangladesh at Dhaka in December 2004 at the age of 20 years and 44 days. Suthar's achievement places him second on that list among Indian bowlers.
Youngest Indian Spinners To Take 10-wicket Haul In An Away Test
India's victory was completed on August 19, 2026, with Suthar's second-innings spell of 6/55 proving decisive in dismissing Sri Lanka. His four-wicket contribution in the first innings had already helped India establish a firm grip on the match before his second-innings effort sealed the result.

The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the series against Sri Lanka. Suthar's sustained workload throughout the Test underlined his capacity to bowl long spells in subcontinental conditions away from home, a quality that will be of considerable interest to the Indian team management as the series continues.
