Michael Hussey rejects England batting coach role, opts for Cricket Australia consultancy

Michael Hussey has turned down the England Test batting coach role and accepted a part-time consultancy with Cricket Australia, leaving Stephen Fleming's support staff rebuild with a significant gap ahead of a demanding international schedule.

Fleming, who was appointed England Test head coach in late July 2026 after replacing Brendon McCullum, had approached Hussey in August 2026 for the batting coach position. Fleming and Hussey carry an 18-year professional relationship forged across multiple stints at Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, where Hussey contributed both as a player and later as a batting coach. That shared history made Hussey a natural first target for Fleming as he assembled his new England setup, which makes the rejection a notable early setback for the incoming head coach.

As reported by The Guardian, the 51-year-old former Australia batter declined, preferring a part-time consultancy role with Cricket Australia, a flexible arrangement that would allow him to stay active in franchise cricket and broadcasting rather than take on a full-time international commitment. Neither Cricket Australia nor the England and Wales Cricket Board had publicly confirmed the decision as of September 2.

The core of Hussey's decision was his desire to retain flexibility. A permanent England appointment would have required him to step away from franchise cricket engagements and his broadcasting commitments, neither of which he was prepared to relinquish at this point in his career.

His 2026 schedule already reflected that preference. The former Australian batter served as head coach of Welsh Fire in The Hundred during the year, a short-format, high-intensity role that suited the kind of arrangement he favours. He had previously joined England's support group in a part-time capacity for the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, a tournament England won, demonstrating that he was comfortable contributing to the England setup without a long-term contract. The Cricket Australia consultancy replicates that model, keeping him involved in Australian cricket on terms that preserve his broader schedule.

With Hussey unavailable, England must fill the batting coach position during a period of considerable fixture pressure. Marcus Trescothick has been performing the duties in a temporary capacity throughout the current Test series against Pakistan, a series England lead 2-0 heading into September 2026.

Fleming now needs to confirm a permanent appointment before England travel to South Africa, Bangladesh and Australia, three tours that precede a home Ashes series scheduled for the following summer. Whether the ECB will pursue a fresh external candidate or move to formalise Trescothick's position has not been confirmed.
