Former Delhi player Mithun Manhas is the front-runner to become the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with reports suggesting he will be elected, possibly unopposed, at the board’s Annual General Meeting on September 28. The former Delhi captain’s growth stemmed from intensive behind-closed-doors consultations among senior administrators and the backing of key decision-makers.

The BCCI presidency fell vacant after Roger Binny completed his term and retired on reaching the board’s age limit, leading to a high-level meeting of office-bearers and senior figures to shortlist candidates for multiple posts, including president, secretary, and IPL chairman. That process, held in New Delhi, narrowed the field and produced Manhas as a leading candidate, with several current office-bearers expected to retain their roles. Notably, the elections are scheduled for the AGM on September 28.

Meanwhile, Manhas is a well-known figure in Indian domestic cricket and has been active in coaching and administration, most notably with the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), which nominated him for the presidency. His administrative stint and hands-on work in grassroots development led to attracting many selectors who favour someone with domestic-structure experience over a big-name former international.

The 45-year-old played 157 first-class matches, scoring 9,714 runs at an average of nearly 46, with 27 centuries and 49 fifties while playing for Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. He also featured in the IPL for franchises such as Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, and Chennai Super Kings, and later worked in IPL support roles and as a batting consultant.

Furthermore, names such as Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, and Raghuram Bhatt were discussed, and according to reports, a marathon meeting of senior administrators, including the current secretary and other office-bearers, settled on a point that largely preserves continuity for positions like secretary and IPL chair, even while bringing a new president.
