Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 witnessed another outstanding fielding effort on Wednesday as Australian star Steve Smith grabbed a stunning low catch during the clash between Washington Freedom (WF) and Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) at the Pomona Fairplex in California. While Freedom went on to register a convincing six-wicket victory, it was Smith’s athletic brilliance in the field that became one of the biggest talking points of the contest.

Renowned for his safe hands and sharp reflexes, Smith once again demonstrated why he remains one of the finest fielders in world cricket. His exceptional catch removed the dangerous Colin Munro at a crucial stage of the innings and helped Washington Freedom tighten their grip on the match.

The spectacular moment came on the final ball of the 11th over of the Los Angeles Knight Riders innings. Left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis cleverly bowled a slower short-of-a-length delivery outside off stump, tempting Munro to go for an aggressive shot. The left-hander made room and flat-batted the ball firmly towards mid-off but failed to generate enough elevation.

Positioned inside the circle, Smith reacted instantly. Sprinting to his left, he launched into a full-length dive and timed his movement to perfection before completing a brilliant catch just inches above the ground. The ball was dropping rapidly, but Smith maintained excellent balance and soft hands to ensure it did not spill out on impact.

Munro’s fighting knock of 25 off 31 deliveries came to an end, while Dwarshuis celebrated an important breakthrough. The stunning effort quickly made its way across social media, with fans applauding Smith’s outstanding anticipation, athleticism and composure under pressure.

While Smith’s breathtaking catch stole the spotlight, Washington Freedom also delivered a disciplined all-round performance to secure a comfortable six-wicket victory. Asked to bat first, Los Angeles Knight Riders struggled throughout their innings on a challenging Pomona surface and were bundled out for just 108. Munro top-scored with 25, while Rovman Powell provided late resistance with a brisk 30 off 19 balls. Saurabh Netravalkar and Mitchell Owen claimed three wickets each, while Dwarshuis and Ian Holland picked up two apiece.

In reply, Washington Freedom encountered a few early hiccups after Sunil Narine removed Mitchell Owen and Andries Gous inside the opening three overs. However, Smith anchored the chase with an unbeaten 40 off 44 deliveries, while Mark Chapman contributed a composed 34 from 30 balls during a crucial 62-run partnership for the third wicket. Nikhil Chaudhary chipped in with 15 before Smith and Lahiru Milantha guided Freedom home with 17 balls to spare, lifting the defending champions to fourth place on the MLC 2026 points table.
