Mohammad Abbas breaks Waqar Younis' record with 5-wicket haul at Lord's

Mohammad Abbas claimed a five-wicket haul in England's second innings at Lord's on August 30, 2026, becoming the seventh Pakistani bowler to take a five-for in a Test at the ground. The decisive moment arrived when Ollie Robinson, having scored 8 runs off 15 balls, edged behind to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan to give Abbas his fifth wicket of the innings.

Abbas returned figures of 5/57 in the second innings, adding to his 4/73 in 20 overs from the first innings. His combined match tally of 9 wickets for 127 runs in 40.1 overs is the highest by any Pakistani pace bowler in a single Test at Lord's, surpassing the previous best of 8 wickets for 154 runs in 49 overs set by Waqar Younis during the July 1996 Test at the same venue.

England were dismissed for 208 in their second innings in 54.2 overs, leaving Pakistan needing 389 runs to win the second Test.

Abbas joins Khan Mohammad, Mudassar Nazar, Waqar Younis, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah as the only Pakistani bowlers to take a five-wicket haul in a Test at Lord's. His nine-wicket match return places him second on the all-time list for Pakistani bowlers in a single Lord's Test, behind Yasir Shah's 10/141 in 60 overs from July 2016.

The record for the best single-innings figures by a Pakistani bowler at Lord's remains with Mudassar Nazar, who took 6/32 in 19 overs in August 1982. Abbas' previous best match performance at the ground was 8/64 in 31 overs, recorded in May 2018, a mark he has now comfortably eclipsed.

Abbas has also drawn level with Waqar Younis on 17 wickets as the leading Pakistani wicket-taker against England at Lord's across multiple Tests. Abbas has reached that figure in two Tests, while Younis required three appearances between 1992 and 2001.

Should Abbas take one further wicket in the ongoing match, he will stand alone as the highest wicket-taker against England at Lord's among Asian bowlers. The mark of 17 wickets is currently shared by Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, Ishant Sharma and Waqar Younis, and Abbas is now level with all four.

The performance underlines Abbas' exceptional record at Lord's, where his ability to extract movement off the seam has consistently troubled England batters. His first-innings return of 4/73 and second-innings 5/57 represent a sustained effort across both innings that few visiting pace bowlers have matched at the ground.
