Mohammad Kaif names biggest threat for India ahead of Test series against Sri Lanka

India are all set to kick off their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign in Sri Lanka with a two-match Test series beginning on August 15. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill and vice-captain KL Rahul, the visitors will look to continue their strong overseas performances and secure valuable WTC points. However, with both matches set to be played in spin-friendly conditions, Sri Lanka will be confident of testing India’s batting unit on home soil.

The upcoming series marks an important step for both teams in the new World Test Championship cycle. India, led by Gill, will be aiming to make a positive start after entering a new era in Test cricket under the young captain. A successful tour could provide early momentum in the race for a place in the WTC final.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will rely heavily on familiar home conditions in Galle and Colombo. Ahead of the opening Test, former India batter Mohammad Kaif singled out left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya as the biggest threat to India’s chances. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif praised the Sri Lankan spinner’s impressive record and his ability to consistently bowl in threatening areas.

Jayasuriya has rapidly established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s premier red-ball bowlers. His ability to generate bounce from his height, combined with accuracy and subtle variations, has helped him become a match-winner in home conditions. His record of 125 wickets in just 25 Tests underlines the impact he has made since his debut. Given India’s recent struggles against quality spin in overseas conditions, Kaif believes Jayasuriya could play a decisive role if the pitches offer significant turn.

“They have one bowler, Prabath Jayasuriya, whom I was looking at. He is a left-arm spinner. Prabath has 125 wickets in 25 Test matches. He could trouble our batters because he is quite tall and accurate as well. He consistently bowls the kind of deliveries so, this could be a problem,” Kaif said.

Despite the challenge posed by Sri Lanka’s spin attack, expectations remain high from Gill and his team. The Indian captain has earned praise for his leadership and batting consistency, and the upcoming series presents another opportunity to strengthen his credentials in the longest format.

India possess a strong mix of experienced players and young talent capable of adapting to demanding conditions. Much will depend on how the batters negotiate Sri Lanka’s spinners, while the bowlers will be expected to exploit any assistance available and keep the hosts under pressure.

With valuable WTC points at stake and both teams eager to make a strong statement early in the cycle, the two-Test series promises an intriguing battle. While Kaif has warned India about the danger posed by Jayasuriya, Gill’s side will be determined to overcome that challenge and begin their campaign on a winning note.
