Mohammad Kaif reveals ‘weak point’ in Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s batting

Vaibhav Suryavanshi‘s international debut generated plenty of excitement, but former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes the 15-year-old has one clear area to improve after his first outing for the senior team. The teenage sensation became the youngest Indian to play international cricket when he featured in the second T20I against England, producing a brief yet entertaining knock before being dismissed for 14 off just 10 deliveries. While Kaif praised Suryavanshi’s fearless approach, he pointed out one area of concern in the teenager’s batting.

Suryavanshi made an immediate impression by clearing the ropes twice, displaying the attacking style that earned him a place in the Indian squad. However, his innings ended when England all-rounder Will Jacks deceived him with off-spin, allowing the wicketkeeper to complete a stumping.

Reflecting on the dismissal, Kaif suggested that the teenager has not had enough exposure to quality off-spin, particularly during his IPL campaign, where he rarely encountered off-spinners while opening the batting. According to the former India cricketer, this lack of experience was evident during his debut innings. Kaif also made it clear that one innings should not be used to assess the youngster’s long-term potential. Instead, he viewed the dismissal as a valuable learning experience that could help Suryavanshi develop into a more complete batter.

“I feel the start was okay. He got out because he does not play off-spin a lot. Even when he opened in the IPL, how many times did he get to face an off-spinner? This is the problem. It was his first match, and I will not judge. But he might have to work on this,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

India now face an important selection decision before the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on July 7. With the visitors trailing 1-0 in the five-match series after the opening game was washed out and England claimed victory in the second encounter, team management must decide whether to continue backing Suryavanshi or recall Sanju Samson, who was left out for the previous match.

The youngster’s aggressive intent at the top of the order offered glimpses of his immense talent despite the short stay at the crease. His confidence in taking on the bowlers immediately was one of the positives for India, even though the innings ended sooner than expected.

The third T20I could therefore become a significant moment in Suryavanshi’s early international career. Another opportunity would allow him to respond to the challenge highlighted by Kaif and demonstrate improvements against spin bowling, while a change in the playing XI could see Samson return to strengthen India’s batting unit.
