Mohit Sharma announces retirement from all formats of cricket

Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing the curtain down on a 12-year career. The 37-year-old pacer announced on December 3 through an Instagram post, thanking teammates, coaches, and supporters.

Mohit represented India in 26 ODIs and eight T20Is between 2013 and 2015, taking 35 ODI wickets and six T20I wickets. He was also part of India’s squad at the 2015 ODI World Cup, where he claimed 13 wickets. In the IPL, he featured in 120 matches for four franchises, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans, collecting 134 wickets and making himself one of the most dependable bowlers in the death overs.

In his retirement note, Mohit expressed gratitude towards the Haryana Cricket Association, thanking Anirudh Chaudhry for mentoring him throughout his career. He also thanked his wife for constant support and patience through the highs and lows of professional sport.

Mohit’s breakthrough moment came during the domestic season in 2012-13, where he picked up 37 wickets under the stewardship of pace coach Ian Pont. His performances earned him a contract with Chennai Super Kings in 2013, where he excelled under MS Dhoni. In 2014, he even won the Purple Cap after taking 23 wickets.

He made his India debut the same year and quickly became a dependable supporting seamer in ODIs and T20Is. In the IPL, Mohit grabbed attention with his variations, famously for his back-of-the-hand slower balls, cutters, and subtle pace changes. Across his IPL career, he picked up 57 wickets in the death overs alone.

After missing the IPL in 2021 and 2022, Mohit made a brilliant comeback with the Gujarat Titans in 2023. The veteran picked up 27 wickets, finishing just one short of the Purple Cap. He followed it up with 13 wickets in the 2024 season before moving to the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025. His final appearance came earlier this year for DC before he was released ahead of the 2026 auction.
