In a significant setback for the defending champions, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have confirmed that their young wicketkeeper-batter, G Kamalini, has been ruled out for the remainder of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 season. The teenager, who had been a regular feature in MI’s playing XI this campaign, will miss the crucial business end of the tournament after sustaining an injury recently. The franchise has not disclosed the exact nature of the injury, but the development comes at a time when MI are pushing hard for a playoff berth.
Kamalini’s absence is a blow not just because of her role behind the stumps, but also due to the balance she provided to the side. Trusted by the team management, the Tamil Nadu youngster was given consistent opportunities throughout the season, highlighting MI’s faith in her long-term potential. Losing her now forces the defending champions into an enforced reshuffle at a decisive stage of the league.
Despite showing plenty of promise, Kamalini endured a modest season with the bat for Mumbai Indians. The teenager featured in all five matches played so far but could manage only 75 runs at an average of 18.75, failing to convert starts into match-defining contributions. While her numbers with the bat were underwhelming, Kamalini impressed with her composure and alertness behind the stumps, pulling off several neat takes and effecting sharp dismissals. Her work as a wicketkeeper often stood out even when runs were hard to come by.
Her omission leaves a noticeable gap in MI’s middle order and also disrupts the team’s on-field dynamics. With the playoff race intensifying, the defending champions will now need to rethink their batting combination and assess how best to maintain stability without compromising depth.
With Kamalini sidelined, MI’s immediate concern revolves around the wicketkeeper’s role. It is widely expected that uncapped Indian keeper Rahila Firdous could be drafted into the playing XI for the upcoming high-stakes clash against the Delhi Capitals. While Firdous brings promise and domestic experience, stepping into a pressure situation in the WPL will be a stern test as MI look to safeguard their position on the points table.

Acting swiftly, the Mumbai Indians management has announced Vaishnavi Sharma as Kamalini’s replacement for the remainder of the season. The left-arm spinner made her international debut on December 21, 2025, and featured in all five matches of the series, picking up five wickets while earning praise for her control and economical spells. Her recent call-up to India’s ODI squad for the Australia tour further underlines her growing stature. While Vaishnavi may not be a like-for-like replacement, MI will hope her bowling adds a new dimension as they aim to defend their title.
