Nandre Burger ruled out of MLC 2026; Texas Super Kings announce replacement

Texas Super Kings have been dealt a significant blow in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 season after South African fast bowler Nandre Burger was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. The left-arm pacer had featured in the early stages of the competition and was expected to play a key role in the franchise’s bowling attack.
The injury comes at a difficult time for the Super Kings, who are looking to improve their position in the standings after a mixed start to the campaign. Burger’s absence further adds to the growing injury concerns that have affected several Super Kings franchises across global T20 leagues in recent months.
Texas Super Kings confirmed on June 24 that Burger will leave the tournament after medical scans revealed a recurrence of a pre-existing stress reaction in his back. The franchise stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent the injury from developing into a more serious stress fracture.
The South African speedster played two matches for TSK during MLC 2026. He completed his full quota of overs against the Seattle Orcas and also featured against the San Francisco Unicorns before being sidelined. Across his appearances, Burger picked up one wicket while maintaining an economy rate of 6.67.
The latest setback continues a frustrating injury trend in Burger’s career. He previously missed South Africa’s ODI series against Ireland in 2024 due to injury concerns and was later ruled out of the Bangladesh Test series and the SA20 competition because of a lumbar stress reaction. Earlier in his career, a lower-back injury in 2021 kept him out of action for almost a year.
To replace Burger, Texas Super Kings have signed South African all-rounder Dian Forrester. The 25-year-old has represented Johannesburg Super Kings in SA20 and recently made his international debut for South Africa. Forrester also gained valuable franchise experience this year, featuring in both the Pakistan Super League and IPL 2026 after joining Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as a replacement player.

Despite his recurring fitness issues, Burger enjoyed a productive IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals (RR). The left-arm quick emerged as one of the franchise’s most reliable pace options and played an important role throughout the tournament. Burger featured in 13 matches during the season and claimed 14 wickets at an average of 31.42. His performances made him the joint second-highest wicket-taker for Rajasthan Royals and highlighted his ability to consistently provide breakthroughs with the new ball and during the middle overs.
His pace, bounce and left-arm angle proved valuable assets for the Royals, particularly on surfaces that offered assistance to fast bowlers. However, just weeks after completing a successful IPL campaign, Burger has once again found himself battling injury concerns.
Texas Super Kings will now hope that Forrester can fill the void left by Burger as they look to revive their MLC 2026 campaign. With the franchise currently searching for consistency, the South African all-rounder’s arrival could provide much-needed balance in both departments.
