The Women’s World Cup 2025 witnessed a stunning performance from Bangladesh as they handed Pakistan a humiliating seven-wicket defeat in Colombo on October 2. This result came as a major reality check for Pakistan, who are preparing for a crucial clash against India in the coming days. Bangladesh’s Rubya Haider Jhelik starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 54, while Shorna Akter ran through Pakistan’s batting line-up with sensational figures of 5/3 in just 3.3 overs.

From the very first over, Bangladesh made Pakistan pay for sloppy shot selection and poor planning. Marufa Akter ignited the collapse by dismissing opener Omaima Sohail and Sidra Amin in consecutive deliveries, leaving Pakistan reeling at 2/2. Muneeba Ali and Rameen Shamim attempted to steady the ship with a 42-run partnership, but successive wickets from Nahida Akter halted any momentum. Fatima Sana, Aliya Riaz and Sidra Nawaz managed to reach double figures, yet the innings never gained traction.

Diana Baig offered some resistance with 16 runs, but Pakistan were ultimately bowled out for a paltry 129 in 38.3 overs. Shorna’s figures of 3/5 were particularly remarkable, as she bowled three consecutive maidens and captured two crucial wickets. Bangladesh’s bowlers combined discipline with pressure, exposing Pakistan’s inability to play spin effectively, a concern that will loom large ahead of their clash against India.

Chasing a modest target of 130, Bangladesh initially adopted a cautious approach, scoring just 23 runs in the powerplay. Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Diana, seemed to have the upper hand early, with Fargana Hoque falling in the second over. However, the match turned when captain Nigar Sultana Joty joined Jhelik in the middle. The duo added a 62-run partnership that shifted the momentum firmly in Bangladesh’s favour.

Jhelik, gradually building confidence, punished Pakistan’s spinners with precise boundaries, while Joty attacked aggressively to dismantle the remaining resistance. Even after Joty’s dismissal for 23, Jhelik’s composed 54 unbeaten ensured Bangladesh stayed ahead. Mostary then sealed the victory with an unbeaten 24 off 18 balls, highlighting Bangladesh’s calm and calculated approach. The performance serves as a major morale boost for Bangladesh while leaving Pakistan’s team management with urgent lessons on handling spin and executing plans under pressure.

For Pakistan, this was a day to forget. A horrific start to their World Cup campaign. Improvements needed across the board if they're to improve upon their atrocious record in World Cups. Played 21. Lost 20. Not. Good. Enough. #PAKvBAN

Pakistan have a huge advantage of playing the entire #CWC25 at the same ground. The team, however, lack skills to make it count and there has not been any improvement in the recent years.

But …

Well played Pak women cricket team and congrats Bangladesh for win…. gap between facilities given to Ban and Pak women is huge but gap in class isn’t that huge. Just give Pak women 50% of Bangladesh’s facilities and they’ll show you how they can rule world cricket. #BackOurGirls
