NZ vs ENG 2025: Kane Williamson ruled out of T20Is, but may be back for ODIs

New Zealand star Kane Williamson is set to miss their upcoming T20I series against England. However, there is some hope that he gets back for the One-Day Internationals leg to follow. Williamson last played for New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy in March 2025, where the side lost to eventual winners India.
The seasoned batter has earlier made himself unavailable for the T20I series against Australia and the tour of Zimbabwe to take part in county cricket and the Men's Hundred as part of a deal with Middlesex. Williamson currently holds a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter remarked that Williamson was dealing with a 'minor medical issue' in the previous month and that it was mutually agreed that he required more time to recover. Walter also provided key updates on white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner and talented southpaw Rachin Ravindra, both of whom are returning from their respective injuries.
"He's obviously a world-class player and we're hoping these two weeks will ensure he's ready for the ODIs against England and the following tour by West Indies. It's great to have Mitch [Santner] back. Alongside being our leader, he's one of the very best white-ball spinners in the world and his skills and experience will be a welcome addition. Likewise, it's nice to welcome back Rachin who was unlucky to miss out on Australia and I know is really excited for this series," stated Walter, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Test cricket deserves more support globally: Williamson
James Neesham, who was originally picked up as a replacement of Rachin for the Australia series, found a place in the 20-over squad against England too. He had impressed with 4/26 in the final T20I against the Mitchell Marsh-led side.
