After two comprehensive wins, New Zealand had to fight hard in the third ODI against England at the Sky Stadium in Wellington on Saturday, November 1, to complete a whitewash.
Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first on Saturday. The New Zealand bowlers bowled wonderfully with the new ball and dismissed half the England side inside the first 11 overs. At 44/5, the Three Lions were staring down the barrel. It is important to note that in the first and second ODIs, England lost five wickets with 33 and 81 runs on the board.
Sam Curran and Jos Buttler joined forces and added a 53-run stand off 68 balls to give England hopes of a resurgence. However, both the set batters were dismissed in quick succession as the tourists were reduced to 102/7. Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton stitched a counter-attacking 58-run stand off 50 balls. The latter registered his first fifty in ODI cricket after Brydon Carse was dismissed for a 30-ball 36.
The partnerships for the last two wickets added 62 runs off 53 balls as England were bowled out for 222 in 40.2 overs. Blair Tickner bagged a four-for, while Jacob Duffy finished with a three-wicket haul.
In reply, New Zealand got off to a fantastic start as Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra added 78 runs inside 13 overs. However, the two left-handed batters were dismissed in the space of five balls.
Apart from Dary Mitchell, who made 44 off 68 balls, none of the middle-order batters managed to put their hand up. Wickets kept tumbling through the middle overs as the Kiwis found themselves in a spot of bother at 147/5 in 29.1 overs.
Mitchell Santner and Mitchell added 41 runs off 39 balls to take the hosts closer to the target. However, from 188/5, they slumped to 196/8, as England were fighting tooth and nail to avoid a series whitewash. However, Zakary Foulkes and Blair Tickner's unbeaten 30-run stand off 37 balls for the ninth wicket took the Black Caps home with two wickets and 32 balls to spare.
Jamie Overton showed a lot of heart during his exhilarating knock of 68 runs off 62 balls. He belted 10 fours and two sixes, finishing with a strike rate of 109.68. The seam-bowling all-rounder helped England to get to a fighting total after they were tottering at 97/6 when he walked out to bat.
Blair Tickner continued from where he left off in the second ODI. The speedster took advantage of the seamer-friendly conditions and moved the ball considerably to cause all sorts of problems for the England batters. Tickner finished with magnificent figures of 4/64 in 10 overs.
New Zealand whitewashed England in an ODI series for the first time in 42 years. Also, Jamie Overton scored his first half-century for England in the format.
