NZ vs WI 2025: Matt Henry returns as Black Caps name squad for ODI series

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) named a formidable squad for their three-match ODI series against the West Indies, starting on November 16. One of the highlights was the return of veteran pacer Matt Henry.
The right-arm fast bowler missed New Zealand's previous ODI assignment, which was against England in October-November, due to a calf strain. He is currently undergoing a rehabilitation programme to prepare for the ODI and the subsequent three-match Test series.
Meanwhile, 32-year-old Blair Tickner, who bagged two consecutive Player of the match awards against England in the second and third ODIs, retains his spot in the squad. The Napier-born had picked up eight wickets in two games at an average of 12.25 and a strike rate of 13.50. Before that series, Tickner hadn't played a 50-over encounter for the Kiwis since 2023.
However, the New Zealand team has been dealing with some injury woes of late. The likes of Mohammad Abbas (ribs), Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O'Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring) have been sidelined due to injuries. Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson wasn't considered for selection as he commences preparation for the Test series, which gets underway on December 2.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his excitement after Henry's return to the side. The former also praised Tickner for his performances against the Three Lions.
"Matt is a vital member of this group and the senior leader of our pace attack, so it'll be great to have him back around the group for the ODIs and Tests. He will be fresh and fit after a good rest, and we know he'll be raring to go ahead of a big five weeks with the white and red ball," Walter was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
"We couldn't have asked for more from Ticks against England. He brought plenty of energy, and his pace and bounce proved to be a big test for some of the best batters in the world. It was pleasing to see him come in at short notice and perform at that level, and that's a testament to the hard work he's been putting in away from the group," he added.
Conway pays tribute to Williamson on T20I retirement
New Zealand Squad for ODIs: Mitchell Santner (C), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (WK), Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Will Young
