John Campbell has received a call-up to the ODI squad after a six-year hiatus in the format. He has been selected in the 15-member squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. All six ODIs Campbell has played came in 2019. It is understood that strong red-ball performances ensured a recall to the ODI setup.
Campbell has 248 runs with a highest score of 179 off 137, which came in his sixth ODI, against Ireland in Dublin. Despite a stellar knock, he was never selected to play in the ODI squad again.
He Campbell was also Jamaica's leading run-getter in the Super50 Cup last season. He struck at 102.20 while scoring 278 runs in seven innings.
Johann Layne and Shamar Springer also received their maiden call-ups in the 50-over unit. Furthermore, Matthew Forde has returned to the squad, making a comeback from a shoulder dislocation after playing the T20I series against the same opposition. The three have replaced Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie and Ramon Simmonds.
Layne is set to be an integral part of the seam attack which features Jayden Seales and Romario Shepherd apart from the likes of Springer, Forde and Justin Greaves. Meanwhile, Ackeem Auguste, who made his ODI debut in Bangladesh in October, has retained his spot alongside Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaz. The squad will be led by Shai Hope.
The ODI series is scheduled to commence on November 16. The second and third matches will be played on November 19 and November 22, respectively. A three-match Test series will follow in December. West Indies recently lost the T20I series by a 3-1 margin.
