Pakistan name 18-player squad for Test series against South Africa; no place for Naseem Shah

Pakistan have unveiled their 18-player squad for the highly anticipated home Test series against South Africa, set to begin on October 12 in Lahore. Shan Masood will continue to lead the side, marking the start of Pakistan’s ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign. The announcement includes some notable recalls, surprising omissions, and opportunities for uncapped players.
Shaheen Afridi returns to bolster pace attack
One of the biggest boosts for Pakistan is the return of left-arm speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was unavailable during the recent Test assignment against the West Indies earlier this year. His inclusion strengthens Pakistan’s bowling unit, especially with the challenge of facing the reigning World Test Championship winners. Afridi’s fitness and form will be closely monitored, as he remains central to Pakistan’s chances in the series.
Naseem Shah left out of selection
In a significant move, Naseem Shah, another frontline pacer, has been left out of the squad. The selectors have not provided an explicit reason for his omission, but it is believed to be linked to workload management and the availability of other pace options. Hasan Ali, Aamir Jamal, and Khurram Shahzad join Shaheen in leading Pakistan’s fast-bowling department. The decision to exclude Naseem is bound to raise discussions, given his proven ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
Experience meets youth in batting order
Pakistan’s batting group sees a blend of seasoned performers and emerging talent. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan remain pivotal figures, expected to anchor the middle order and provide leadership with the bat. Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq are likely to open the innings, while Saud Shakeel and Salman Ali Agha will look to build on their growing Test reputations. The inclusion of Kamran Ghulam provides further depth, ensuring flexibility for the selectors ahead of the first Test.
Three uncapped players eye debut
The squad announcement also opens the door for three uncapped players—Asif Afridi, Faisal Akram, and Rohail Nazir. Left-arm spinner Afridi and young left-arm wrist spinner Akram will provide variety to Pakistan’s spin attack, which already features Abrar Ahmed, Sajid Khan, and Noman Ali. Rohail Nazir, a promising wicketkeeper-batter, has been rewarded for his domestic performances and will serve as backup to Rizwan. Their selection reflects Pakistan’s intent to invest in youth while keeping one eye on the future.
South Africa challenge looms large
The two-match series promises to be a stern test for Shan Masood’s men. South Africa, the current World Test Championship holders, are known for their aggressive pace attack and resilient batting lineup. The first Test at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore begins on October 12, followed by the second Test in Rawalpindi from October 20. Pakistan will aim to start their WTC campaign on a strong note, while South Africa will be keen to assert their dominance in Asian conditions.
