Rahul Dravid reveals what he actually writes in his notebook during RR’s IPL 2025 matches

In a season where Rajasthan Royals (RR) have struggled to find momentum in IPL 2025, one enduring image has captured the imagination of fans: head coach Rahul Dravid, calmly scribbling in his notebook amid the dugout’s tension. As RR bowed out of the playoff race, Dravid finally addressed the speculation, revealing that the content of his notebook is far more straightforward than many imagined.
For months, social media buzzed with theories about Dravid’s notebook—was it a secret tactical playbook, a list of motivational quotes, or perhaps a running critique of player performances? The answer, as Dravid disclosed in an interview with Star Sports, is refreshingly simple: he is just keeping score.
“I have a particular way of scoring a game, both the T20 and ODI game. I just have a particular way of scoring it, which actually helps me review the game. So I can look at a scorecard, but I just score it in a particular way that I find very comfortable and easy to be able to review without looking at the scorecard,” Dravid explained.
This method is not about recording incidents or crafting complex strategies. Instead, Dravid maintains an over-by-over record in a format that suits his analytical style. It allows him to revisit key moments—like a sudden collapse or a powerplay surge—long after the match has ended.
“It’s honestly as boring or as dumb as you can say—just scoring the game in a particular format that makes it easier for me to look back on it. I’m not writing some great truths or anything there,” Dravid added, downplaying the mystique that had built up around his habit.

Dravid’s approach is emblematic of his career-long emphasis on discipline, preparation, and presence. In an era where teams rely heavily on data analysts and digital dashboards, Dravid prefers the tactile engagement of pen and paper.
“Sometimes you’re sitting back in your room at the end of a game, and you want to review the game and think, okay, what happened in that over or what happened in that particular phase of the game,” he shared, highlighting how his notes help him relive and dissect the match on his own terms.
This “boring” routine, as he calls it, serves a dual purpose: it keeps Dravid involved in the match and provides a personalized tool for reflection. The act of scoring the game himself helps him maintain focus, even during the most chaotic moments in the dugout. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the fundamentals—being attentive, methodical, and accountable—matter more than flashy technology or dramatic gestures.
