Rajat Patidar, Dinesh Karthik confront umpires over strategic time out during RCB vs CSK match

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar, along with head coach Andy Flower and Dinesh Karthik, were seen confronting the umpires after they took a strategic time out without consulting the team. This happened during RCB’s batting innings against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, April 5, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
According to the rules, the umpires are required to ask the batting captain when they want to take a strategic time out. However, at the end of the 14th over, a strategic time out was called for without RCB’s knowledge.
Patidar, Karthik and Flower were clearly unhappy with the misunderstanding which resulted in the two-and-a-half-minute break being taken.

Things did not work out for RCB after the strategic time out. The very next ball after the stoppage of play, the defending champions lost Devdutt Padikkal, who was dismissed for 50 from 29 balls.
It was, however, a blessing in disguise for RCB with Australia’s Tim David walking out to bat. The right-handed batter completely changed the game after scoring an unbeaten 70 off just 25 balls, an innings including three fours and eight sixes to take his side to 250 from their quota of 20 overs.
The total went on to be a bridge too far to cross for CSK, who suffered a 43-run defeat in the Garden City. Sarfaraz Khan’s 50, along with Prashant Veer and Jamie Overton’s 43 and 37, respectively, were the only innings of note from the visitors who lost their third successive game of the 2026 IPL season.
RCB, on the other hand, have now won both of their games so far and have started their title defence season in the best possible scenario. With a net run rate of 2.501, the team from Bengaluru are at the top of the standings. CSK, meanwhile, are at the foot of the standings with a net run rate of negative 2.517.
