Reports: Reserve players who will not be in Colombo Test XI will not be released for Duleep Trophy

The Indian team management has decided to keep its reserve players with the touring party in Colombo rather than releasing them to their Duleep Trophy zonal sides. Those reserves who do not make the playing XI for the decisive second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club will remain unavailable for at least the quarter-finals of the domestic competition.

RevSportz reported the development on Saturday, August 22, a day before both fixtures are due to begin. The second Test and the Duleep Trophy quarter-finals are scheduled to start simultaneously on Sunday, August 23, creating a direct scheduling conflict that appears to have driven the management's call.

The 2026-27 Duleep Trophy is the 63rd edition of the competition and runs from August 23 to September 10, 2026. All matches are held at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Six zonal teams compete in a single-elimination knockout format: Central Zone, East Zone, North Zone, North East Zone, South Zone, and West Zone.

Central Zone and South Zone received direct byes to the semi-finals, so the four remaining zones begin their quarter-final ties on August 23. Those quarter-final days run concurrently with the four days of the Colombo Test, which is the precise overlap at the heart of the no-release decision.

Spinner Saransh Jain is one player confirmed to be part of both the India squad for the Sri Lanka series and a Duleep Trophy zonal squad, having been selected for East Zone. His situation is among those directly affected by the reported decision.

South Zone's selection committee did not include KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, B Sai Sudharsan, or Prasidh Krishna in their Duleep Trophy squad. Those four players are expected to complete their Test commitments by August 27, and South Zone's semi-final is scheduled to begin on August 30, which means the no-release decision may have limited practical impact on that group.

Confirmed zonal captains ahead of the tournament include Ruturaj Gaikwad for West Zone, Rajat Patidar for Central Zone, Ishan Kishan for East Zone, and Tilak Varma for South Zone. The Duleep Trophy opens India's 2026-27 domestic red-ball season, which builds towards a home Border-Gavaskar Trophy scheduled for January and February.
