The much-anticipated first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has officially begun at the iconic Galle International Stadium. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first, aiming to put runs on the board in favourable batting conditions. With both teams bringing strong lineups and momentum, fans can expect a thrilling five-day contest.
This Test also marks an emotional chapter in Sri Lankan cricket history as veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews plays his farewell game in the longest format. In a poetic turn of fate, Mathews is bidding adieu to Test cricket at the same venue—Galle—where he made his debut back in 2009.
A special ceremony was held ahead of the match by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to honour the 37-year-old, with teammates, family, and fans in attendance. Many cricketing personalities, including India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma, took to social media to congratulate Mathews on his illustrious career and wish him well for life beyond the field.

As he prepares to take the field one last time in whites, Mathews opened up about the highlights of his remarkable Test career. “It’s been a dream run,” said Mathews, reflecting on a journey that spanned over 100 Tests and more than 8000 runs.
Regarding the best moments of his Test career, Mathews reckoned that Sri Lanka’s Test wins in England in 2014 and registering a series sweep against Australia in 2016 are his most memorable moments.
“The wins in England in 2014 and whitewashing the Aussies in 2016 stand out,” added Mathews.
Mathews also spoke with pride about the next generation of Sri Lankan cricketers. Expressing confidence in the team’s promising talent pool and leadership under Dhananjaya de Silva, Mathews said: “I’ve seen so many youngsters come through the ranks. I truly believe Sri Lanka’s future is in good hands.”
