Robin Uthappa picks his all-time India Test XI; no place for Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar

India‘s rich Test cricket legacy has been built on the brilliance of some of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Over the decades, the country has produced legendary batters, world-class bowlers, inspirational captains, and exceptional all-rounders who have helped India become one of the strongest forces in red-ball cricket. From unforgettable overseas triumphs to dominant home performances, several generations of Indian cricketers have left a lasting mark on the longest format. Picking an all-time India Test XI is, therefore, one of the toughest tasks, with every selection bound to spark debate among fans and experts alike.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa recently shared his all-time India Test XI, selecting a blend of modern-day superstars and legendary match-winners. While the lineup boasts immense quality and experience, a few notable omissions have become the biggest talking points among cricket fans.

Uthappa picked the explosive Virender Sehwag to open the innings alongside current India batter KL Rahul. At No. 3, he placed the ever-reliable Rahul Dravid, widely regarded as one of India’s finest Test batters.

The middle order features two modern-day giants of Indian cricket—Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli—who have rewritten numerous batting records during their illustrious careers. Behind the stumps, Uthappa opted for former India captain MS Dhoni, while legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev occupies the crucial No. 7 position.

The bowling attack combines spin and pace in equal measure. Ravichandran Ashwin and Anil Kumble form a formidable spin duo, while Jasprit Bumrah and Zaheer Khan complete the pace department. The combination offers variety, experience, and the ability to succeed in different conditions across the world.

While Uthappa’s XI includes several of India’s greatest-ever cricketers, the absence of some legendary names has generated plenty of discussion. Perhaps the most surprising omission is Sunil Gavaskar, widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batters in Test history. Gavaskar was the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket and excelled against some of the fiercest pace attacks of his era. Many fans consider him an automatic selection in any all-time India Test XI, making his exclusion a major talking point.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly also failed to make the cut. Ganguly played a pivotal role in transforming the Indian Test team into a fearless outfit, especially in overseas conditions. His leadership laid the foundation for many of India’s future successes, while his elegant left-handed batting produced several memorable performances in the longest format.

Another notable absentee is Harbhajan Singh, one of India’s most successful off-spinners. Harbhajan played a crucial role in numerous Test victories, including the famous 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph over Australia, and remains among India’s leading wicket-takers in Test cricket.
