Robin Uthappa warns Vaibhav Sooryavanshi against falling off the wagon like Kambli and Shaw

Robin Uthappa has highlighted the challenge facing young cricket talent in India, using the examples of Vinod Kambli and Prithvi Shaw to illustrate how promising players can lose their way. Uthappa spoke about the pressures and distractions that confront emerging cricketers as they progress through the ranks.

His comments centre on the importance of maintaining focus and discipline during the formative years of a career. He pointed to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as a player with exceptional potential but one who will face significant tests in the coming years. Uthappa's observations reflect broader concerns about how young talent is managed and protected in professional cricket.

"He could have a bigger impact on white-ball cricket than Tendulkar. But how he's managed is going to be important. We've seen exciting players come through the ranks in Indian cricket before. We saw Vinod Kambli and Prithvi Shaw, and people started asking what they would become when they were 17-18 years old. What are they going to become? And then suddenly they fall off the wagon," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.

Uthappa emphasised that Sooryavanshi's ability to remain focused on cricket will be crucial as he matures. The former India batter noted that the 15-year-old currently demonstrates a disciplined approach to his career, turning down commercial opportunities to concentrate solely on the sport. However, Uthappa cautioned that maintaining this level of commitment becomes harder as a player grows older and faces new pressures.

"That will be Vaibhav's first test, so to speak. Can he stay pristine for the game over a period of five years? He's 15 now, so can he stay pristine till he's 20? There are enough people to take care of him, and he should focus on the game itself. When we listen to everything that he says, there's so much innocence in who he is." Uthappa said.

"I love the fact that he's saying no to every advertisement and every deal that is coming his way, and he's focusing only on cricket. He is being perceived as a child. When he's 18, he'll start being perceived as a man, and the female attention will come. That can distract people as well." he added.

Uthappa stressed the importance of shielding young players from external distractions during their developmental years. He advocated for a protective approach that allows emerging talent to concentrate on cricket without the complications that arise from social media exposure and public attention. Uthappa's belief is that the environment surrounding a young player significantly influences their long-term trajectory.

"I don't think he should be introduced to social media right now. This kid is made for cricket. You felt that with Virat. He is made for this. Allow him to live in that bubble. I think he should not be denied the outside world," said Uthappa.

Sooryavanshi finished as the highest run-scorer and Player of the Series in India's three-match assignment against Zimbabwe. The young batter demonstrated his ability to perform at the international level, though he also had a modest outing against England. These contrasting performances highlighted the inconsistency that young players often experience as they establish themselves in international cricket.
