Rohit Sharma was seen visibly annoyed at the umpire before he walked in to bat in the second innings alongside Ryan Rickelton during their game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 12.
First started during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), umpires have made a constant effort to make sure that the dimensions of the bats used by the players are in accordance with the regulations, so that there is no unfair advantage in the bat vs ball contest.
However, when the umpire tried to check Rohit’s bat, the bat gauge instrument failed to pass entirely through as it should, despite multiple tries. At one point, Tilak Varma had to come and help the umpire check the bat correctly, which did not go down well with Rohit.
The full video of Rohit’s interaction with the umpire can be seen below:

It has become mandatory for batters to use bats that comply with Law 5 of the MCC's Laws of Cricket. According to the rules, a bat is restricted to a thickness of 4cm (1.56 inches), the overall depth to 6.7cm (2.64 inches), and their width to 10.8cm (4.25 inches).
If any bat fails to meet the allowed restrictions, the batter cannot use it and instead has to bring out a new one. The one brought in as a replacement will also be checked by the umpire.
Unfortunately for the MI crowd, Rohit did not have a lot to contribute in the game as he left the pitch, retired hurt after five overs. The former captain, however, did hit one huge six on the leg side to surpass 6,000 runs for the franchise he first joined back in 2011.

RCB went on to win the contest by 18 runs after putting 240 on the board in the first inning. The defeat means MI are now winless in three consecutive games in the 2026 IPL.
