Rohit Sharma in safe boat amid ODI retirement rumour, BCCI gives massive hint after review meet
The Board of Control for Cricket in India held a performance review meeting at its headquarters on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The gathering brought together India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was absent from the meeting, reportedly out of Mumbai in a no-internet zone.
One of the key items on the agenda was the ODI futures of senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, with an eye on planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the media after the meeting and offered a clear signal regarding Rohit's position in the side.
"You must have seen he is playing brilliantly," the board secretary said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Reports ahead of the September 3 meeting indicated that a selection committee member had conveyed to Rohit Sharma that the selectors wanted to move forward without him in ODIs. This communication reportedly left Rohit unhappy, and there were suggestions he was ready to announce his retirement from the format before the situation evolved.
The trajectory of those discussions appeared to shift after Rohit scored 138 in the third ODI against England at Lord's. That innings changed the tone of the retirement conversation and brought his form back into sharp focus ahead of the BCCI review.
Prior to the meeting, the question of whether Rohit would continue in ODIs had become a significant talking point, particularly given the 2027 World Cup cycle. The board's gathering on September 3 was seen as a key moment to address those futures formally.
Following the review meeting and Saikia's public remarks, Rohit Sharma is expected to remain in contention for India's three-match ODI series against West Indies, which is scheduled to begin on September 27, 2026. No formal announcement on his ODI future was made after the September 3 meeting.
The specific details of what was discussed internally regarding Rohit's long-term ODI plans have not been disclosed by the board. Whether a formal decision will follow in the coming weeks remains unclear, and the BCCI has not confirmed any change to his status at this stage.
The absence of chief selector Agarkar from the meeting also left questions open about the exact alignment between the selection committee and the board's leadership on the matter. For now, Saikia's comments after the review represent the clearest official signal that Rohit's ODI place is not under immediate threat.
