'Rohit training with same hunger as after 2011 World Cup snub' - Former coach highlights 'very positive sign' ahead of Australia series

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar feels Rohit Sharma is intent on proving his fitness and form in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Rohit has not played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Bangar compared Rohit's current fitness routine to the one he followed after missing out on the squad for the 2011 World Cup. Bangar also felt that being regularly targeted for fitness has had a lasting effect on Rohit's mindset.
“The last time Rohit Sharma followed such a strict fitness regimen was after he missed out on the 2011 World Cup. That exclusion left a deep wound in his heart, and I think we’re seeing a similar level of determination from him now. From 2012 to 2024, he’s had a wonderful and successful career, but being called out for his fitness has clearly stayed with him, and he has worked hard to address it," stated Bangar while speaking on JioStar.
Bangar highlighted how players and even the captain do not always find themselves fielding in the inner ring and opined that Rohit was completely up to the challenge to throw himself around on the field.
"It’s visible in his preparation and his mindset. It’s great to see Rohit Sharma hungry and fit once again. As a captain, you don’t always have the luxury of fielding inside the 30-yard circle; sometimes, you need to patrol the outfield, dive around, and contribute as a fielder too. Rohit seems to be preparing himself completely for that challenge, and that’s a very positive sign,” he added.
The eight-match white-ball series between Australia and India is set to commence on Sunday, October 19. Many eyes will be on Rohit and how he performs. For the unversed, Rohit was recently removed as the ODI captaincy, with the baton passed to Shubman Gill. The announcement was made by Ajit Agarkar during the selection announcement for the ODI and T20I squads.
