One of the most anticipated red-ball contests of the year is just around the corner, as England and India prepare to face off in a five-match Test series starting today. With the series set to begin at Headingley, both sides are eager to stamp their dominance. For India, it’s a chance to prove their mettle overseas without the experienced duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have now retired from the longest format. For England, it’s about defending their home supremacy under the Bazball philosophy. The contest also marks a new era for Indian cricket, with 25-year-old Shubman Gill leading the side in a full Test series for the first time.

Legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar has backed the Gill-led team to win the England series 3-1. Speaking ESPNcricinfo, Tendulkar expressed his confidence in the squad’s abilities despite the challenge of English conditions.

“I agree 3-1 for India,” he said, aligning with many fans who believe that India’s pace battery and young batting lineup have the potential to outclass the hosts.

Tendulkar’s prediction reflects both optimism and belief in the depth of the current Indian squad, especially considering the team’s recent overseas performances and the emergence of promising talents.

Alongside his prediction, Tendulkar also took the time to offer some heartfelt advice to India’s new Test skipper, Gill. The Master Blaster urged the youngster to block out external criticism and focus solely on the game plan discussed within the team environment.

“My advice to him would be that he should not worry about what x, y, z is saying. His captaincy — whether Shubman is being aggressive, or defensive, or attacking enough — those are just outside opinions. What truly matters is whether the decisions made align with the team’s strategy and are in the best interest of the country. Only the dressing room has that honour of making decisions and executing plans. Others can only comment. I’d say to Shubman: enjoy the moment, give your best for the country, and shut the doors to everything outside,” added Tendulkar

It’s worth remembering that India’s last Test series victory in England came in 2007, a historic moment in which Tendulkar himself played a pivotal role. India won the second Test at Trent Bridge and held on to draw the other two, sealing a memorable 1-0 triumph under the leadership of Rahul Dravid. Tendulkar top-scored with a fluent 91 in the first innings of the Nottingham Test — an innings still cherished by Indian fans. That victory remains India’s only Test series win in England since 1986.

Now, nearly two decades later, with a young captain at the helm, the question is whether Gill’s side can emulate — or even surpass — that iconic 2007 moment.
