Sam Konstas signs four-year extension with Sydney Thunder

Sam Konstas has extended his contract with Sydney Thunder until Big Bash League (BBL) 2028-29. The 19-year-old has featured for five matches for the Thunder so far.

Konstas, who scripted a record half-century (the fastest in the Thunder's history) on his BBL debut in December last year, expressed his excitement on the opportunity to learn more alongside childhood hero David Warner & Co., stating that the Thunder will end up playing some top-notch cricket in the upcoming edition.

"I remember being a fan in the stands watching my heroes like Davey (David Warner), Michael Hussey and Andre Russell play for Thunder, so to extend for another four seasons is very exciting. Batting with Davey last season was a great learning opportunity for me because he's very strategic in the way that he goes about things. I felt like I had a lot of clarity and freedom to play my game. We've got an exciting group again which now includes Shadab (Khan). I feel like this is the year we're going to dominate," Konstas was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Trent Copeland, the General Manager of the franchise, was all praise for Konstas' growth as a cricketer and was chuffed on the teenager's contract extension.

"Since I started in this role, it's been remarkable to watch Sam's progression. This time last year, he hadn't played a BBL match, and to go from that to breaking records on debut - alongside his growth across other formats - shows just how far he's come. This deal is huge in terms of tenure, and we see it as part of a journey that will hopefully make him a Thunder player for life," commented Copeland.

CA eyes spot next to IPL with rigorous BBL investments

Since making his BBL debut for Sydney Thunder, Konstas has represented Australia in 10 Tests. The talented top-order batter is yet to make his white-ball debut for the country. Konstas, along with the others in the Thunders' setup, is expected to be key to the team's hopes for a title in the 2025-26 season. The Thunder finished as the runners-up in the previous iteration.
