The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India A squad for the three-match One-Day series against Australia A, as well as the Rest of India (ROI) squad for the Irani Cup. India A will play their matches in Kanpur starting September 30, while the Irani Cup will be played in Nagpur from October 1 against the champions of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of India A for the three-match One-Day series. Earlier, Rajat Patidar was designated as the One-Day captain, but he has now been shifted to lead the ROI squad after showcasing impressive leadership in the Duleep Trophy final for Central Zone against South Zone, where he lifted the silverware.
Tilak Verma will serve as the deputy for Iyer in the One-Day matches, while Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the deputy for ROI in the Irani Cup. Iyer had requested for a break from red-ball cricket and sidelined himself from the second unofficial Test against Australia A, but will now lead the team in white-ball cricket. The BCCI also confirmed that Iyer has decided to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket.
Iyer recently underwent back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well. However, he experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He will use this period to build endurance, improve body resilience, and focus on fitness. Consequently, Iyer was not considered for selection in the Irani Cup.
