Indian captain Shubman Gill etched his name into Indian Test cricket history on Sunday, becoming the fourth-youngest batter from the country to accumulate 3,000 runs in the longest format. The right-hander crossed the milestone during the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo, needing only seven runs at the start of play to get there.

Gill had fallen agonisingly short during the first Test at Galle, leaving those seven runs as unfinished business heading into Colombo. He did not take long to settle matters. Kapil had been 26 years and 356 days old when he reached 3,000 Test runs, meaning Gill beat that mark by a margin of only seven days.

The list of Indians who have reached 3,000 Test runs before the age of 27 is a short and distinguished one. Sachin Tendulkar stands at the top by a wide margin, having achieved the feat at 23 years and 228 days. Virender Sehwag is second, reaching the milestone at 26 years and 157 days, while Dilip Vengsarkar completed the same journey at 26 years and 263 days.

Gill's entry at 26 years and 349 days makes him the fifth name on this list overall, with Kapil Dev now sitting one place below him at 26 years and 356 days. The gap separating Gill from Tendulkar at the top is more than three years, which underlines just how exceptional Tendulkar's early career output was. That Gill has joined this group at all, however, places him in genuinely rare company among Indian Test batters.

Gill's path to 3,000 Test runs across the two-match series in Sri Lanka illustrated both his consistency and the fine margins involved at this level. He came within seven runs of the landmark at Galle but could not close it out in that match, leaving the task for Colombo.

Once the second Test began, Gill moved through those final runs without fuss.
